This procurement follows the Innovation Partnership procedure and seeks innovative businesses to help UU tackle key industry challenges in innovative ways.
The top applicants will win places in UU's Innovation Lab. The Lab is a 10-week programme and participants will co-locate and work with UU to develop, improve, test and demonstrate their idea, potentially in live environments. A supply arrangement may follow.
Those meeting the published selection criteria will be invited to put forward ideas in the 5 categories, each a separate lot as described below. A single idea may be submitted only for a single lot. See www.unitedutilities.com/innovation for more detail.

United Utilities has over 5 000 employees working across the business and many more in their supply chain — undertaking tasks such as asset repair, maintenance, visiting customers and moving from job to job. Many of these are lone workers, working remotely from the central team. United Utilities has recently introduced mobile devices to many of their employees and these could be enabled with new technologies or solutions to help with coordination and performance. How can United Utilities better collect, learn from and distribute knowledge? Help ensure the safety of team members in the field? Or maximise time on jobs by prioritising workloads in real-time? Solutions here could come from many fields, including wearable technology, connected transport or tools distributed via mobile devices.

What predictive tools can pull together data sources (temperature, acoustics and pressure), network knowledge, traits of certain geographies, materials, water hardness to detect when bursts are going to happen and where? Tools like VR, IoT, and sensors could all be employed to help United Utilities serve the network proactively.

III.1.3) Gallu technegol a phroffesiynol

Interested economic operators must confirm in their application that they have the capacity to attend the Innovation Lab in order to pass through to the Ideas Stage.
III.1.4) Rheolau a meini prawf gwrthrychol ar gyfer cymryd rhan
UU requires a return on its investment. In order to pass through to the Ideas Stage, interested economic operators must confirm in their application that they are willing to offer UU one or more of: (i) the option to take share capital (i.e. an equity stake) in the company owning the idea; (ii) the right to receive a share in the sales of the resulting product(s) developed in the Lab; and / or (iii) equivalent rights to share in the proceeds generated from the ideas developed in the Lab, for example by way of assignment of Intellectual Property Rights.
III.1.8) Ar ba ffurf gyfreithiol y bydd y gr?p o weithredwyr economaidd y caiff y contract ei ddyfarnu iddynt:
UU may specify certain requirements as to the legal form of lab participants, for example successful economic operators may be required to form a limited company and / or to transfer their business (including any relevant intellectual property rights) into the limited company prior to entry into the lab.
UU will be working with L Marks in the delivery of this procurement process. Interested economic operators can take part in a webinar explaining the application process on 5.9.2017, joining details for the webinar will be made available at https://www.unitedutilities.com/innovation in due course.
Following the completion of the Innovation Lab, UU may enter into a supply agreement with one or more participants. The maximum price will be set at no more than demonstrable and approved costs + 50 % margin. Alternatively, UU may take a license to manufacture from one or more participants. Final versions of the contract terms will be provided prior to Pitch Day. Drafts are made available at the application stage for information, along with a draft procurement document for the Ideas Stage.
UU will not pay candidates for Lab participation alone, but will provide a fixed maximum level of practical support in consideration for which participants will be expected to carry out the relevant R&D activities. UU will pay each successful candidate up to 5 000 GBP for legal costs for participants to review and understand the contract terms before entering the Lab.
