On the 2 October 2020, the UK Government announced the introduction of the Port Infrastructure Fund (PIF), available to Ports across the UK to improve readiness for the completion of the UK's exit from the European Union on 1 January 2021. The results of the competitive bidding process were published on 17 December 2020 with the following outcome:

Total: GBP 26 324 127

Works must be substantially complete by 1 July 2021.

The following general categories of works will be undertaken:

Port entry infrastructure

• border control points and checks;

• warehousing and storage;

• vehicle loading and unloading.

Ancillary infrastructure;

• staff and driver welfare;

• offices, utilities and technology infrastructure;

• port security, access and servicing facilities.

Port access infrastructure

• road improvements including entry and exit access;

• increased capacity including parking for HGVs and trailers;

• waiting/holding areas to facilitate necessary checks;

The starting date for the contracts is the 18 January 2021.
