Crynodeb

The programme will provide a maximum budget of 17 000 000 GBP over 5 years to increase the use of evidence by policymakers in 3 DFID partner countries. This will contribute to more efficient and effective decision-making by partner governments. In recent years there has been significant international investment in high-quality research (including that funded by DFID and HMG) that can inform how best to reduce poverty in developing countries. However, the generation of research alone is insufficient to lead to improved development outcomes. Currently, there is limited demand for and use of data and evidence by policymakers in many DFID partner countries. This represents a missed opportunity to accelerate countries’ transition from aid by using evidence, data and analysis to establish the most cost-effective policies and programmes for poverty reduction. Strengthening the use of evidence for development impact (SEDI) will address key constraints to the use of evidence in government institutions of 3 partner countries (which will be confirmed during inception in coordination with DFID country offices). It will combine several approaches:

(i) targeted capacity development for individuals and organisations;

(ii) politically smart technical assistance and evidence brokering to support government institutions to use evidence.

SEDI will support selected bilateral DFID programmes to better meet their objectives by strengthening how related partner government institutions use sector specific evidence. SEDI interventions will contribute to increased use of rigorous evidence in 3 countries with benefits for citizens, partner governments and the UK.
