SHET plc is embarking on a large programme of capital delivery projects within it's electrical transmission business in the North of Scotland. The programme of works will increase the export capacity of the existing network such that large volumes of renewable generation can be moved from the generation sites in the north to the consumption centres in the south of the country.

The capital projects being undertaken by SHET plc are both conventional AC systems which the SHET plc business has experience of building, operating/maintaining and less conventional DC systems which will be new to SHET plc with no or limited experience.

Currently there are two HVDC projects planned for execution within the SHET plc programme of works. Caithness Morayshire and Shetland (CMS) is the largest of the two projects and will allow renewable generation on Shetland and in Caithness to be exported via subsea cable to Blackhillock in Morayshire for export onto the 400kV AC network. The second HVDC project is the Western Isles (WI) scheme which will allow renewable generation on the Western Isles of Lewis and Harris to be exported via subsea and land cable to Beauly in Inverness-shire and then onto the 400kV AC grid. Both projects will utilise Voltage Source Converter technology and are rated at 1200MW and 450MW respectively. Further HVDC projects are also in the pipeline and will become live projects when appropriate.

SHET plc intends to develop an HVDC Consultancy Framework to assist in the delivery of these and other future projects.
