NHS Arden and Greater East Midlands Commissioning Support Unit (AGCSU), on behalf of NHS England (referred to as the Authority), is inviting suitably qualified and experienced providers to respond to this Competitive Process for the provision of a Amyloidosis Networked Model of Care Service for the East of England and South-East regions.

Amyloidosis is the name for a group of rare, serious conditions caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein, called amyloid, in organs and tissues throughout the body.
The build-up of amyloid proteins (deposits) can make it difficult for the organs and tissues to work properly.

Without treatment, this can lead to organ failure and death.

This disease presents predominantly in older people and is difficult to diagnose.

A highly specialised service (HSS) was commissioned for amyloidosis as it was;
• a rare disease
• challenging to diagnose outside of a specialist centre and
• patients nationally had poor outcomes with high levels of mortality.

The service has been commissioned for more than 20 years and there is a single national provider, the National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC); Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The increase in activity has meant that the service has outgrown its capacity and this proposal is to establish a network of providers in England. The network will enable the extension of expertise across the country and improve access for patients.

A networked model of care is proposed with four regional centres in the first wave, with an additional two to four to be commissioned later. An initial competitive process was completed in 2025 and resulted in the successful award to two providers for the North West and Midlands regions. This competitive process is being published with the intention of commissioning this service in the East of England and South East regions. This will complete the first wave for this service.

The service is being commissioned under the following Lots:

Lot 1 - East of England
Lot 2 - South East

Patients from the rest of the country, where there is not a network centre already, will continue to access care from London until the second wave centres are in place.
The devolved nations are not currently part of this network approach.

Networks are a vehicle for specialty level collaboration between patients, providers and commissioners. They should have clear lines of accountability with Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) including providers and provider collaboratives, and to NHS England (NHSE) National and Regional Teams, to ensure local ownership, alignment and a local mandate.

The network will deliver:
• better health, wellbeing and better quality of care for all patients
• sustainable and efficient use of NHS resources
• supporting the Greener NHS programme by reducing travel
• developing regional expertise across specialities
• training and succession planning
• preserving and enhancing the internationally recognised, high quality, innovative and research based diagnostic and treatment standards for amyloidosis in the UK, with focus on national inclusivity and equity of access
• enhanced collaboration, national and regional MDTs
• speedier access to specialist treatments
• clear pathways and responsibilities for the NAC and the regions

The service is due to commence in January 2027 or sooner if possible.

The initial contract period is 5 years with Commissioners having the option to extend for up to a further 2 years.

The successful Provider(s) in respect of each Lot is expected to be operational, providing services from January 2027.

The form of contract to be entered into in respect of each Lot will be in accordance with the general NHS Standard Contract issued by the Commissioner(s), which can be found at: https://www.england.nhs.uk/nhs-standard-contract/

To participate in the Competitive Process, please register and access documentation via the Atamis (Health Family) portal: https://atamis-1928.my.site.com/s/Welcome

Should providers have any queries, or have problems using the portal, they should contact Helpdesk at: Phone: 0800 9956035 E-mail: support-health@atamis.co.uk

A provider event via Microsoft Teams is planned for Friday 3rd July 2026 at 11.30am. If you would like to attend, please email anna.salt@nhs.net to register by 5pm on Thursday 2nd July 2026. The awarding of this contract is subject to the Health Care Services (Provider Selection Regime) Regulations 2023. For the avoidance of doubt, the provisions of the Public Contracts Regulations 2015 do not apply to this award.

The decision maker of the award will be: NHS England - National Commissioning Group.

The intention is to award a contracts using the Competitive Process.

The announcement by Government, on 13th March 2025, will not disrupt commissioning and contracting of this service. NHS England continues to exist as a statutory body for now. The dissolution of NHS England during the term of the contract will be subject to an act of Parliament and its undertakings will be transferred as appropriate. As and when NHS England is dissolved, commissioning responsibilities will be transferred to an alternative commissioning authority. At this time, the General Condition 12 ‘Assignment and Sub-Contracting’ of the NHS Standard Contract, as per the obligations of the commissioner, will set out the terms and conditions under which the contract will be transferred or assigned to the relevant commissioning authority.
