Talks Studio
The Talks Studio equipment should include the following as a minimum specification:
Furniture
Designed to accommodate 4 microphone positions. Of these positions, three will be used by presenters with a fourth position reserved for a guest.
The University would like the table to be round or oval in shape. This will help deliver a more collaborative talk studio environment.
The talks table furniture must include acoustic fabric to help reduce any reverb from what would otherwise be a large hard surface.
Microphones
A total of four, large diaphragm, condenser microphones are required within the talks studio. Each position should include a shock-mount and an angle poise arm.
Each microphone position should include a local Mic Live indicator light, so that it is obvious from within the Talks Studio when and which of the microphones are in use.
Monitoring and Talkback
A pair of wall-mounted studio loudspeakers should be provided. These will be used for PGM output from the Control Room, when the talks studio microphones are not live. In addition, it would be preferable for these to also be integrated with a talkback system for ‘whole studio’ communication.
The University would like each microphone position to have unique talkback to the control room. Similarly, the Control Room should be able to talkback to the talks studio headphones, isolating the talkback between the presenter and guest positions.
Each position should have a dedicated headphone socket with local control of their own headphone volume.
Each position should have a cough button, to ‘mute’ the associated microphone from within the talks studio.
News PCs
The three presenter positions each require a a Windows 10 PC for access to Burli (the University will image these PCs and the associated Burli software with a Burli Server).
Each of the talks studio PCs audio output should be available as a unique source on the Control Room mixer. This will enable each of the three talks studio PCs to playout audio from Burli to the PGM bus independently.
Each PC should come complete with a keyboard, mouse and minimum of a 22” monitor display to be installed in the Talks Studio, with each PC base station being installed in the Control Room.
The University does not intend to use the talks studio PC for audio production or editing. The PCs will primarily be used for scripts and audio playback of Burli content.
Studio Indicators
In addition to the local Mic Live indicator lights in the talks studio, a Mic Live and On Air Indicator light are required outside of the studio. This will help to prevent people from walking into the studio during broadcasts and when the microphones are live.
The talks studio Mic Live triggering should be unique to the talks studio microphones.
Clocks
A digital clock displaying the same time as a clock in the Control Room must be included with any submission.
Control Room
The Control Room equipment should include the following as a minimum specification:
Furniture
Specialist technical furniture – designed to house and accommodate new Control Room hardware and peripheral equipment.
The Control Room will be a shared space, reusing some existing TV equipment. Any radio Control Room furniture must allow adequate space for the TV equipment to share the space. See Facility Layout for approximate dimensions.
Where possible, the Control Room furniture should match the Talks Studio furniture in terms of colour and materials used.
The furniture should be positioned to enable good lines-of-sight between the Control Room and the Talks Studio.
Mixer
The University would like a digital mixer solution, enabling any connected sources to be freely assigned to a minimum of 12 physical channels.
The minimum specification for source handing is the following:
• 6 x Microphones (4 x Talks Studio + 2 x Control Room)
• 4 x PCs (3 x Talks Studio + 1 x Control Room) for Burli
• 1 x Skype
• 1 x Analogue Telephone Hybrid (Legacy equipment from existing Studio)
• 4 x Spare for future proofing
The proposed mixer should offer both EQ and Dynamics for all microphones and telephone channels.
The mixer should have and integrated talkback system. This should present at least two headphone rings to isolate presenter and guest talkback to headphone positions in the Talks Studio. In addition, any proposed mixer should include an integrated studio loudspeaker talkback for the talks studio wall-mounted speakers.
The mixer should include ‘on-screen’ PPM monitoring for levels with a separate meter for monitoring Pre-faded channels.
Microphones
Two, large diaphragm, condenser microphones are required within the Control Room. Each position should include a shock-mount and angle poise arm.
Phones
The university would like to integrate Skype calling. A suitable PC and audio card connected to the mixer should be provided to enable this. This PC may also be used for internet and general purpose.
A new analogue telephone hybrid is required to replace the current Sonifex unit. The university is able to provide an analogue line for this.
Monitoring and Talkback
The Control Room equipment will be used for both tech-op and self-op operations. A pair of wall-mounted studio loudspeakers should be included. These will be used for PGM and PF monitoring, when the Control Room microphones are not live.
Please check the above mixer information for more talkback requirements.
Each of the two Control Room positions should have a dedicated headphone socket with independent headphone level control.
News PCs
Because the Control Room will act as both a tech-op and self-op studio, it’s important that the Control Room can follow and control Burli News. This will require the addition of a PC within the Control Room - with it’s audio presented to the mixer.
All PCs should include a keyboard, mouse and minimum of 22” widescreen monitor.
Studio Indicators
A Mic Live and On Air Indicator light are required outside of the Control Room. This will help to prevent people from walking into the room during broadcasts and when the microphones are live.
In the event of the glazed partition wall not being constructed between the Control Room and Newsroom in advance of the installation, cabling should be routed to a point where the indicator lights can be installed at a later date.
Clocks
A digital clock displaying the same time as in the Talks Studio must be included with any submission.
Burli Server
The University has an existing server which is currently shared for Burli and other application use. A dedicated Burli server is required to stop licensing conflicts between the various applications currently running on the same server.
This tender requires the supply of a dedicated Burli server. This server should be located in the Control Room with silent fans.
The University will image the server, therefore no OS is required.
The server should have the following minimum specifications:
• Multi-core i7 Processor
• 16Gb RAM
• 2TB+2TB Storage (with Hardware RAID Controller)
• Silent operation
Power and Data
Due to the number of PCs required, a managed network switch should be provided as part of your design proposal.
All tender submissions should include power distribution units and suitable cable management to reduce the number of visible wires.
