Survey Area 1
c.11 hectares
This area contains most of the remnants of the historic parkland associated with
Penllergare House. These include the western shore of the Upper Lake, the extensive rock
gardens, large numbers of exotic trees (often in picturesque groupings), the rock cutting for
the Carriage Drive and specimen rhododendrons.
This area also contains the extensive remains of the Walled Garden and associated
buildings which form a significant portion of the Phase 2 development of the project.
Modern Car park, coffee shop and administrative area of the Penllergare Trust.
Survey Area 2

Spring wood, Cadle West Bank, Cadle Heath
This is the southern entrance to the valley.
A number of specimen trees and rhododendrons from the parkland phase of the valley’s history.
A large yew grove and substantial oak trees around the boundaries.
Spring Wood was originally two large fields but have been allowed to regenerate naturally
since the early 1900s.
Significant areas of wet woodland along the western bank of the Llan river.

The large central area of the valley. In the 1840s open parkland with veteran oaks and managed as farmland.
Some heathland and rough open area largely as a result of many years of fire damage.
The southwestern portion would have been part of the lower lake for approximately 100
years and now comprises developing wet woodland and grassland.
A small offline lake which is being considered for redevelopment or reinstatement as part of wider ecological plans.
A large field of river dredgings and spoil taken from the desilting of the upper lake .
Significant tracts of nonnatives
including bamboo, rhododendron and fallopia.
